Every student at N.C. State knows where Hillsborough Street is, but not everyone knows the full extent of the arts and recreation that Raleigh’s most historic district has to offer.

Art It Up!, an all-day showcase on Oct. 14, is aiming to inform and entertain by providing a sampling of all the different arts that Hillsborough Street venues have to offer. There’s traditional art like pottery and painting, but Art It Up!’s offerings also extend out more unique types of art like performance dance and comedy.

With 18 events occurring at 16 different locations, essentially anyone can find an activity that suits them — even if they don’t know it yet.

David Dean, the director of programs for Live It Up! Hillsborough Street, advised first-timers to be adventurous and not be afraid to go outside of their comfort zone.

“Things like a behind-the-scenes tour of the Theatre in the Park building aren’t as sexy as Native American drummers at the Gregg Museum, but they’re right beside each other,” he said. “You can do those and walk to Raleigh Brewing and grab a beer or go catch a comedy show.”

From yoga at the Raleigh Rose Garden to interactive audience activities at Jubala, there’s a little bit of something to everyone, making Art It Up! an opportunity to explore and embrace all that Raleigh, especially the area right near N.C. State, has to offer.

“The campus has always had a strong impact on Raleigh, and it makes sense Hillsborough Street is a focal point for its arts institutions,” Dean said. “It’s important that we come together as a community to celebrate what’s already here and embrace the arts that we have right here in this district.”

If you’ve already used your North Carolina State Fair date idea, Art It Up! can serve as a unique experience that’ll be cost-efficient, too. With all that Art It Up! has to offer, it might be best to plan ahead — but don’t let that stop you from being spontaneous if you discover something new. Below is a list of times, locations and cost of the events.
