While most of us awoke on Wednesday morning to a beautiful blanket of snow outside our windows, a group of four first-years woke up to the freezing snow in a tent in Duke University’s famous Krzyzewskiville.

Duke’s line nonitors, who perform routine checks to make sure each tent has the required number of students present, called a grace period at 2 a.m. Wednesday, allowing everyone to go back to the warmth of their dorms until the weather conditions improved. Due to cold weather, grace had been issued every night except at this point.

Yet these four students decided to tough it out overnight. Jake Satisky explained, “We had only been there one night, and I hadn’t slept there at all, so we were still excited about tenting.”

Other more practical reasons included not wanting to make the long walk back to the bus stop that late at night and the need to brush off the snow on the roof of their tent to prevent it from collapsing.

Though it began snowing in the early morning Wednesday, reaching over half a foot of total snowfall, freshman Luc Esformes said the experience was good.

“It wasn’t all that cold until the morning,” said Esformes, who is from Long Island, N.Y.

While they were the only ones to stay overnight Tuesday, many students like these four have committed to spending most of their nights in a tent over the course of the next month in order to get tickets to see Duke play UNC in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

It’s dedication like this that separates Duke fans from the rest.

“It’s the biggest, most anticipated game of the year, and we have limited time to be able to experience something like that,” Esformes said, explaining why sleeping in the cold is worth it.

Giving up a warm dorm for sleeping in the snow may seem like a lot for basketball tickets; however, Duke students are not called “Cameron Crazies” without good reason.
