In case you haven’t heard, the UNC System has a new logo.

It’s part of a new branding strategy that cost $250,000. UNC President Margaret Spellings said she hopes the logo connects North Carolinians with the “promise [that] higher education holds.”

Because the logo was a high-ticket item, I decided to ask students at N.C. State and UNC-Chapel Hill what they thought of the new logo.

Here’s the takeaway: Many students weren’t familiar with the old logo, and they wonder why the system spent money on a new one.

A student from N.C. State said she hadn’t seen the previous logo and that she doesn’t believe “the new branding is super necessary.”

A student who had seen the old logo said “the money could have gone to a better place.”

The logo is nice and simple, a UNC-Chapel Hill student said, but “$250,000 for a graphic is an irresponsible use of funds.”

Another UNC student echoed that sentiment, calling the effort a “waste.”
